Refrigerant circuits and compressors in adapted systems accumulate wear patterns that a visual inspection does not show. Half the homes in Hawaii County, Hawaii were built in 1989 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Stock built for earlier refrigerant standards and smaller electrical draws has been running heat pumps fitted to it over time, and what a contractor finds once the unit is open often has no relationship to what the permit date would lead you to expect. A failed reversing valve or a degraded refrigerant charge is a measurement problem, and the parts a particular system takes have to be confirmed as available before a scope can be set.

The Parts of a Heat Pump a Contractor Checks First

Isometric grayscale illustration of a cutaway two-story house showing interior ductwork, an indoor air handler unit, and an outdoor condenser unit on a pad beside the building.

The outdoor unit is where most repair calls begin. It holds the compressor, which is the heart of the system, along with the condenser coil and a fan. The compressor moves refrigerant through the loop; the coil and fan shed or pull heat from the outside air. When the system stops heating or cooling, or runs but does nothing, these are the pieces a contractor reaches first.

Inside the house, the air handler contains the evaporator coil and a blower that pushes conditioned air through the home. The refrigerant lines running between the two units and the reversing valve, which is what lets a heat pump heat in winter and cool in summer, are also points a contractor inspects when the system behaves differently in one mode than the other.

The drawing shows a general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to the specific system and setup in your home.

Licensing and Legal Requirements in Hawaii County, Hawaii

Hawaii’s contractor licence does not reach a project whose total price for labour, materials, taxes and everything else is not more than $1,000 — but that exemption falls away whenever a building permit is required, whatever the price, and it never applies to part of a larger job.
